Researchers believe that the immune system is to blame. This is after conducting experiments on test subjects to see how they react to exposure to an aggressive intruder.  The said test subjects could not remember the location of an escape hole in a maze that they previously mastered.

This effect was evident after the test subjects endured repeat visits from the aggressive intruder. The researchers concluded from this that one-off stressful situations don’t trigger forgetfulness.

The test subjects that experienced chronic stress showed signs of changes within the brain. This includes inflammation brought on by their own immune system. Brain inflammation caused the short-term memory loss. This is the result of the appearance of immune cells known as macrophages. Psychologists describe the test subjects as giving in to ‘repeated social defeat’ when bullied by the more dominant intruder.

This experiment mimics the chronic psychosocial stress that humans can experience when in abusive relationships. Examples are those with bullying bosses or soldiers in war. In the Journal of Neuroscience, the scientists described the “hippocampus “areas of the brain as controlling memories and emotional responses.

The bullied test subjects had trouble with their spatial memory and would avoid social contact for up to 4 weeks. This includes any form of social contact, indicating depressive behaviour.

Once the test subjects took medication to reduce the inflammation, the depressive symptoms remained. However, the memory loss and inflammatory macrophages disappeared. Therefore, post-stress memory trouble directly links with inflammation and to the immune system, rather than brain damage.

Once the test subjects stopped being at the receiving end of any bullying behaviour, they recovered. The impact on memory and brain inflammation being caused by the immune system is an important finding.
